Why I Love George!

By Charmaine Tanti

Maybe saying that my favourite celebrity is George Clooney might sound cliched. I mean, there are literally thousands of women out there sighing after his good looks and charming smile.
But, truth be told, I feel I owe George because, even though he doesn't know it, he's helped me through some tough times.
My 'story' with George started when I got separated. Back then I hardly knew who George Clooney was. All I knew was that he was the messed up doctor on ER, a programme I watched avidly. So, when I started to suspect that some of my friends would try to fix me up in some blind date/new relationship scheme - something I was not prepared for - I used to fend them off with: 'No way I want to find ANY new man now - it's either George Clooney or no one else'. My friends would laugh, but they got the message, and they left me in peace.
Thing is that by the time that was over, I had really talked myself into an interest in the guy. That he made films that were not so formulaic and sometimes downright unusual helped fuel that interest and I saw him as more than a pretty face. I actually respected the man artistically and to this very day I eagerly await his films, especially since he has this quirky sense of humour which allows him to laugh at himself and at his 'gorgeous guy' image. I also love all the 'in-jokes' in his movies. It makes you feel like you're part of the Clooney movie family.
Another reason why I admire George is his real commitment to humanitarian issues. I know that many celebrities do philanthropic work, but George is one of the few who go that extra mile. I was sincerely impressed when he went to Sudan to report on the situation in Darfur. Considering the atrocities and the hostilities, he was risking even with UN support.
A bit more than a year ago, I decided I wanted to see George 'live'. Of course, I didn't tell anyone this because they'd have laughed their heads off at me and my crazy ideas, but I said it's now or never and came up with a plan. Living in Malta, and George having a villa in Italy, I thought Italy was my best bet to see him. I wasn't considering stalking him near Lake Como. So I checked on the Venice Film Festival calendar to see if any of his films was in the competition. I nearly died when I saw that Burn After Reading was premiering there for the opening of the Festival. I went to Venice with my brother, who is as much of a movie buff as I am, and we had a great day at the festival, which reached the highlight when George (and Brad Pitt, please note! ;D) walked up the red carpet signing autographs and taking photos. Finally, there was George, literally an arm's length away from me! I was so emotional I was going to burst out crying, which is why I didn't say anything to him. Better luck next time!
So from here (even though he won't see it) I officially thank George Clooney for being the great guy that he is, for making movies worth watching (my mum's all-time favourite movie is Oh Brother Where art Thou?) and for your unfailing commitment to humanitarian issues. You'll have my support always.

Congratulations on a successful mission! The only work of his I've seen is Intolerable Cruelty and I thought it was really good. But what are these in-jokes you mention?

Hi thanks for your comment.
Well, as for the in-jokes, one example are the references to his age and his looks (George loves to joke about these since the media makes such a fuss), eg in the Ocean films and, if I'm not mistaken, in The Good German. Others might be references to other films - in Men who stare at Goats, there's a part where Ewan MacGregor tells him that he does not believe in the Jedi thing. Also, even though this is no joke but a family reference, in Good Night and Good Luck, there is a scene where a group of tourists are being shown around the TV studios and are told that Rosemary Clooney is recording there at the moment. This is more a tribute to Rosemary as she had already passed away when the film was made. Knowing what the references are about gives watching the films another dimension.
Those are the only examples I can think of on the spur of the moment. I hope I've managed to make you interested enough to go out and rent some more George films to watch ;)
