My First Few Days at School
By Charmaine Tanti
I always enjoyed going to school. I love learning new things, being around people, facing a challenge. I remember the first day at school, I couldn't understand a word the nuns were saying. I went to St. Dorothy's School, at that time an English-speaking environment, while at home we just spoke Maltese. My father, being a teacher himself, hadn't wanted to send me to school before I was five, so I was placed in kindergarten which had so many pupils that I and some other children did not have a proper table to sit at. I spent the first week at school consoling other children who were crying for their mummies. Being an older sister of a one-year-old brother had already taken a toll on my sense of responsibility! After a couple of days, I was told to get a copybook and a pencil out of my bag and the teacher asked us to write something. I told her that I could write 'aeroplane'. Naturally, she didn't believe me, so she told me to write it down. And I did. Totally correct. My mum hadn't wasted my time at home. By the time I went to school, she had taught me to read and write some words and do simple addition and subtraction. Seeing my age (I was a year older than the other kindergarten kids) and my ability, I was immediately promoted to Year 1. There my new classmates thought I was Japanese because of my haircut. And the rest, as they say, is history. I enjoyed my time at St. Dorothy's so much that now I'm teaching there and having a great time. |

Goodness me, I don't even remember kindergarten! You're lucky to have those memories.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I have very vivid memories of my childhood, but don't ask me what I did last week or yesterday for that matter! Thanks for the comment.
